As summer slowly gives way to autumn, the Tatra Mountains transform into a true landscape painted in warm colors. Leaves on the trees shimmer in all shades of gold and red, and the air becomes crisp and crystal clear. This is the perfect time for hiking, especially since autumn trails, free from summer crowds, allow you to fully appreciate the majesty and tranquility of Tatra nature.
Below, you’ll find suggested routes ideal for autumn strolls.
Chochołowska Valley
Undoubtedly one of the most popular valleys, Chochołowska is absolutely spectacular in autumn. The trail is long but mostly flat and wide, making it perfect for a relaxed walk. The path runs along a stream, surrounded by expansive meadows and forests. Along the way, you’ll pass charming shepherd huts, and at the end of the trail, a mountain shelter awaits where you can rest and enjoy a meal. This is the perfect choice to experience the true golden Polish autumn.

When autumn envelops the Tatras in its colors, Kościeliska Valley becomes one of the most picturesque spots for mountain hikes. Known for its limestone formations and caves, the valley gains a special charm in the golden sunlight. The trail runs along a rushing stream, while trees and shrubs on the slopes shimmer in shades of yellow and red, creating a fairy-tale setting.
This hike is suitable for everyone, regardless of fitness level, making it a perfect family walk where you can enjoy the beauty of nature and fresh mountain air. The route ends at Hala Ornak, where a cozy PTTK shelter awaits.

Rusinowa Polana, located at over 1200 m above sea level, offers a breathtaking panorama of the High Tatras. The gentle trail from Wierch Poroniec makes it an ideal destination for an autumn walk – especially when surrounding forests and meadows are gilded in gold and red. It’s a perfect spot for rest, a picnic, and enjoying the mountains in a peaceful, picturesque setting.
You can finish the hike at the polana itself, or – for those seeking more – continue along the green trail to reach Gęsia Szyja.

Practical Tips for Hikers
The Tatras in autumn create a unique atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and escaping daily hustle. Choose a trail suitable for your abilities to enjoy the beauty of Tatra nature, fresh air, and incredible views at a relaxed pace. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before hitting the trail:
- Clothing: Dress in layers, the so-called “onion style.” Autumn mornings can be chilly, but the sun can warm you up during the day.
- Footwear: Wear comfortable, waterproof hiking boots. Autumn leaves and mud can make trails slippery.
- Safety: Remember that autumn days are shorter. Plan your hike to return before dusk and check the weather forecast.
